Meet World Needs Challenge Partner The King Center

The King Center is repositioning to meet the challenges and opportunities of today. Squarely focused on serving as both a local and global resource, the King Center is dedicated to educating the world on the life, legacy and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., inspiring new generations to carry forward his unfinished work, strengthen causes and empower change-makers who are continuing his efforts today. Through our partnership, The King Center’s participation in the World Needs Challenge will provide support to two critical programs; The Students with King Program and Camp Now Leadership Academy.

Students With King Program

Students with King Interactive Civil Rights Panel Assembly is a King Center youth initiative that creates an interactive educational experience for elementary, middle, and high school students during their visit to The King Center. It’s an inspirational time of learning, with special sessions allowing students to ask questions to extended King family members, people who work with or knew Dr. & Mrs. King, and foot soldiers of the movement. A guided tour is provided by the National Park Service.

Spotlight Videos are a series of Nonviolence Civil Rights videos that were developed for educational use for our K-12 School community, parents, and other agencies needing content on Dr. Martin L. King, Jr., and Mrs. Coretta Scott King (Philosophy and methodology, Purpose of King Center and Social Justice issues).

Students with King Reading Corner is a program designed to support reading literacy in our schools. This program is designed to share quality, subject related readings, and expose students to authors who directly or indirectly cover social justice issues or concepts on the Beloved Community.

Veterans/People of Movement Historical Recordings are a collection of interviews by people from the Civil Rights Movement as well as individuals who knew or worked for Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. or Mrs. Coretta Scott King. These interviews are an oral history compilation that are owned by The King Center for all departments to use and stored for archival purposes. The Students with King Program will utilize content from these recordings to produce content related materials and programs for utilization with our youth.

Celebrate Difference is designed to teach students about the national impact of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the Civil Rights Movement and his global world influence. This youth initiative examines Dr. King’s thought process in solving problems. Celebrate Difference provides a method for middle school students to use to solve real life problems such as bullying, social justice issues, hunger and many other problems by examining Dr. King’s Philosophy and Methodology of Nonviolence. Students hear personal and inspiring stories from an immediate family member. Certified NV365 facilitators introduce the Six Steps and Principles of Dr. King’s NV365 philosophy to students from public, private, and charter schools.

Camp NOW Leadership Academy

Camp NOW Leadership Academy is a multi-year experience that begins each year with a one-week, virtual leadership development experience. We guide youth ages 13-19 in developing and enhancing their leadership, critical thinking and team building skills. The program continues with monthly engagement activities throughout the year. The academy prepares youth to be global leaders and change agents as they engage in the six principles and the six steps of nonviolent social change based on Dr. Martin Luther King’s philosophy, which we call Nonviolence365®. The highly intensive program utilizes technology, financial literacy, public speaking, multi-level communication and Kingian leadership practices to develop our students to become complete global citizens who will inspire nonviolent change across the world. The 2021 CNLA cohort has had the largest number of students participate to date.
